Executive Director, Global Youth Excellence and Leadership (GYEL) Program
The Global Youth Excellence & Leadership (GYEL) program was recently invited to speak and featured in a national webinar co-hosted by U.S. News and CollegeAdvisor.com, titled “Start Early to Stand Out.” Designed to equip families with high-impact strategies for college success, the session featured GYEL as the voice on global leadership and extracurricular distinction.
The co-host of the event, Natalie Herring, brings nearly 30 years of senior admissions experience from some of the most selective institutions in the world, including the University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago, and Dartmouth College. She has shaped admissions policy, reviewed thousands of applications, and guided students from all backgrounds to top-tier universities. During the session, Natalie emphasized the importance of starting early, building leadership experience, and developing a global perspective, and recommended GYEL for students striving to become the kind of applicants top colleges seek.
With our foundation in the United Nations system, global faculty, and hands-on curriculum, GYEL is consistently recognized by leading institutions and education experts as a program that empowers students to thrive—not just in admissions, but in life.
We are the only global youth excellence program co-created by college admissions officers, educators, diplomats, and industry leaders, operating within the UN system—empowering students from all backgrounds, especially those from marginalized communities, to gain admission to globally respected universities, thereby positioning them to create meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.

GYEL is a selective, application-based program designed to prepare high-achieving inside or outside the classroom students for world class universities, successful careers, and leadership roles on a global stage.
The Global Youth Excellence and Leadership Program (GYEL) is a multilateral and multistakeholder initiative of intergovernmental organizations, permanent observers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and organizations with official special consultative status in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). It functions within the framework and ecosystem of the United Nations system and operates under the auspices of members and organizations within the United Nations system. The primary goal of GYEL is to foster excellence and leadership among global youth through a variety of strategic political and social initiatives. The program has focused on preparing individuals to become future leaders who are equipped to address the complex challenges of an increasingly interconnected world.
Each Coalition Partner to the UN listed on our About page has signed a formal Institutional Agreement between their UN-affiliated organization or agency (recognized under the United Nations framework) and GYEL. They are not a Coalition Partner in a personal or unofficial capacity. They represent their organization and agency in an official role as a designated signatory within the UN system.
The second part of the Global Youth Excellence & Leadership Program (GYEL) transforms knowledge into leadership. While Part 1 established the academic and global foundations, Part 2 is where students apply that foundation to real-world problems, present original research or social enterprise prospectus, and prepare for prestigious fellowships, competitive admissions, and career-shaping opportunities.
Part 2 challenges participants to step forward not just as students—but as emerging experts, problem-solvers, and contributors to the global conversation.
This is where tomorrow’s leaders begin taking action today.
Students attend a 3-hour advanced lecture per topic led by distinguished instructor who hold degrees from institutions like Harvard, Oxford, and Stanford, and who have shaped real-world diplomacy, humanitarian efforts, and global policy.
These are not facilitators or moderators—they are thought leaders with firsthand experience at the United Nations and other global institutions, delivering rigorous instruction designed to elevate students to the highest levels of academic and intellectual performance.
In addition to weekly lectures, students are invited to a 2-hour office hour session where they may ask questions, seek academic feedback, and gain tailored insight from our expert instructors. These sessions offer direct mentorship in a setting that mirrors the advisory support structure of top universities.
GYEL has instituted a Learning Management System, TalentLMS, so students can follow along with curriculum content and monitor their own progress. Instructors can assist students during Office Hours with any resubmissions of Topic Units that may need revisions.

Students explore elite international fellowships (e.g., Rhodes, Schwarzman, Fulbright) and develop a roadmap for applying to high-impact programs during and after high school.
A practical session focused on refining students’ written deliverables for the Global Solutions Initiative. Students will receive guidance to ensure their research paper or social enterprise prospectus meets professional, publishable standards. The session also introduces students to formatting their work for use in college portfolios, resumes, and LinkedIn, helping them turn their Global Solutions Initiative into a lasting academic and leadership credential.
Each session begins with a short proficiency exam to help students review material, stay on track, and reinforce academic retention.
Each Topic is broken into 3 Lectures with assignments such as open debates, group discussions, or written assignments to encourage student participation. Student work is always evaluated by our team with feedback and opportunities for resubmission. All curriculum and submitted work are maintained within our Learning Management System, TalentLMS.
A cornerstone of Part 2, The Global Solutions Initiative challenges students to design an original, solution-oriented initiative addressing a global challenge. Students will develop a well-researched argument, policy recommendation, or innovation using credible data, real-world case studies, and advanced research methods.
As with all GYEL initiatives, our standard is mastery—not perfection under pressure.
Students may retake the entire program and/or the Global Solutions Initiative as many times as needed, free of charge, to reach the formal standard of excellence required for GYEL’s Coalition Partners to the United Nations.
With direct mentorship from UN-affiliated experts, world-class academic structure, and one of the most respected global networks in youth leadership, GYEL delivers more than a program.
It delivers a foundation. A credential. A launchpad.

In a recent survey of students and parents who completed a full track of the Global Youth Excellence & Leadership Program (GYEL), we asked what they found most valuable about their experience. Here’s what they shared:
Please email questions to: applications@un.gyel.org
Rolling admissions is a flexible admissions process where applicants can submit their applications at any time within a specified period. Applications are reviewed as they are received, and admission decisions are made on a rolling basis, usually within 2-4 weeks. This approach provides greater flexibility for applicants, allowing them to apply when they feel ready, rather than being restricted to a single deadline. Additionally, rolling admissions often result in faster decision processing, as applications are evaluated continuously rather than all at once.
Many universities and programs adopt rolling admissions, including Brown Pre-College (https://precollege.brown.edu/apply) and the University of Pittsburgh (https://admissions.pitt.edu/first-year-student/). Applications for upcoming terms must be submitted at least one month before the term begins. For example, Fall Term (September–December) applications are due by August 1.
Although our admissions standards remain consistent throughout the application period, the number of available spots does not. As more applicants are offered admission over time, fewer spots remain open. Therefore, submitting your application earlier can improve your chances of acceptance simply because there is a greater pool of available seats earlier in the cycle.
The Global Youth Excellence & Leadership Program (GYEL) is committed to fostering the next generation of global leaders while ensuring financial accessibility for all qualified students. As part of the program’s funding model—aligned with well-established self-sustaining frameworks used by reputable international organizations and UN-affiliated initiatives—families contribute to administrative and operational costs in a way that maintains both excellence and inclusivity.
Rather than a fixed tuition model, families share in the program’s equitable administrative costs, ensuring accessibility while upholding the highest standards of excellence. This collective contribution model allows the program to remain sustainable while providing world-class mentorship and leadership training to students from diverse financial backgrounds.
To support the program’s global impact, GYEL follows a tiered contribution approach, ensuring fairness and accessibility:
The contribution cost per course ranges from $1 to $5,500, with each year’s cap reassessed based on external support to the program. Future adjustments may result in a lower or higher cap, with most families contributing 2.5% of their annual household income. This ensures affordability while sustaining the program’s high-caliber faculty and operations.
Families earning an annual income of $200k or more are expected to contribute the entire tuition cap per course.
Generous financial aid is available, ensuring that financial limitations do not prevent students from participating.
Our Coalition Partners to the UN firmly believe that cultivating future leaders is a shared responsibility, and our funding approach reflects this commitment.
For more details on financial assistance and educational grants, please visit our Financial Aid Page.
The program is currently experiencing an unprecedented surge in applications than in previous years—which has placed an increased workload on the administrative team and application review committee. While each application is thoroughly reviewed, please allow 2–4 weeks to receive a decision. For general questions or clarifications, a response may be expected within 3–5 days. Appreciation is extended for families’ patience and understanding as the team strives to address all inquiries as promptly as possible.
As the program continues to fulfill its mission of developing future global leaders, there has been a consistent increase in applications each year while maintaining a commitment to small cohort sizes that enable meaningful mentorship and collaborative learning. In response to this growth, the application policy has been revised: candidates may now submit one application per calendar year, rather than quarterly submissions as previously allowed. This change ensures fairness and consistency in the admissions process, particularly as the applicant pool expands while program capacity remains constant.
Applications continue to be welcomed in subsequent years. The selection committee membership rotates annually to maintain fresh perspectives, and it is recognized that meaningful personal and professional development often occurs between application cycles. Many qualified candidates are not admitted on their first attempt, and each new submission is evaluated independently, without reference to previous applications.
Each quarter, we are honored to receive a notable number of applications from talented students worldwide. While our admissions committee carefully evaluates every application based on merit, leadership potential, and alignment with program values, the selection process remains rigorous.
Historically, our acceptance rate hovers around 20%, reflecting the program’s commitment to maintaining small, high-caliber cohorts that foster meaningful mentorship and collaboration. Given the increasing number of applications each year, early submission is encouraged to ensure the strongest possible consideration.
All applications are reviewed holistically, meaning there is no single formula for admission. While academic excellence and extracurricular achievements are important, we also look for individuals who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, a passion for leadership, and a drive to make a meaningful impact.
Yes. It is understood that circumstances may make it necessary for a student to step away. If a participant needs to unenroll at any time during the session, this may be done immediately without issue or prejudice. Additionally, if a family has made administrative cost contributions, all contributions will be returned. If a participant wishes to join the same program or another in the future, a new application would be required. Please note that no verification of GYEL completion will be issued if requested by other institutions.
No. A previous application outcome does not impact any subsequent submission. Each new application is reviewed independently, and there is a maximum of one application per year. Additionally, the decision committee is reconstituted annually, ensuring a fresh evaluation for every applicant.
Yes. Upon successful completion of the session, a formal certificate of completion will be issued, and verification letters will be provided to external institutions. Such verifications have previously been issued for various universities around the world, including:
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) – United States, Imperial College London – United Kingdom, University of Oxford – United Kingdom, Harvard University – United States, University of Cambridge – United Kingdom, Stanford University – United States, ETH Zurich – Switzerland, National University of Singapore (NUS) – Singapore, UCL – United Kingdom, California Institute of Technology (Caltech) – United States, Peking University – China, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) – Singapore, Cornell University – United States, The University of Hong Kong – Hong Kong SAR, The University of Sydney – Australia, The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) – Australia, Tsinghua University – China
The program is well-versed in international documentation standards and can provide institution-level certification upon request. Please note that a student must be in good standing without any disciplinary concerns in order for participation and achievements to be verified.
The program does not directly facilitate or sponsor internships. However, many past participants have pursued internships or research opportunities with UN-accredited intergovernmental organizations, UN-accredited NGOs, and offices of Ambassadors and Secretaries-General. While there is no influence or guarantee over these positions, it is recognized that many in the UN system are risk-averse and appreciate applicants with a proven record of professionalism. Accordingly, upon request, the program will forward official professionalism history to relevant institutions. No subjective opinions or recommendations are provided, only verification of conduct during the program. This allows prospective hosts to confirm an individual as a recognized individual with a documented track record in the UN system, as well as in other private or governmental institutions.
At GYEL, the team is deeply passionate about bridging the gap between extraordinary potential and the world’s leading diplomats, change makers, business leaders, scientists, government leaders, and experts in the arts and sciences. The UN stakeholders also recognize an urgent responsibility to support the future Nobel Peace Prize winners, Pulitzer Prize recipients, Turing Award computer scientists, Fields Medal mathematicians, groundbreaking medical researchers, Academy Award filmmakers, and yes, the next Thomas Edison.
Session leaders have backgrounds spanning political science, geopolitics, and leadership. Recognizing that in today’s increasingly complex world, excelling in just one discipline is no longer enough, leaders must become adept across multiple fields, combining insights from different subject matters. Our Coalition Partners to the UN are deeply passionate about leveraging their decades of global networks and resources to provide students with guest lecturers in diverse sectors—from diplomacy to business, technology to the arts. By learning from high-performing mentors in such varied domains, participants gain a rare ability to piece together insights in ways others cannot.
Students have access to support from session leader mentors and advisors through email and office hours. They can ask questions, seek guidance on assignments, receive feedback on their work, and more.
Yes, students will participate in various interactive activities, including debates, group discussions, case studies, and a final project presentation. These activities are designed to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios and enhance practical skills.
Please see the Overview page to determine if a family qualifies for Need-Based Assistance and Educational Grants.
Yes. The program includes components that may qualify for community service credit, and formal service-hour documentation has been provided for various educational and civic awards in the past.
The program is designed for middle school and high school students, typically those in grades 8–12 across the world.
Given that the program has students across the world who attend, it is held virtually.
Yes. In numerous circumstances, members of the program community—including diplomats and Coalition Partners to the UN—may issue letters of recommendation for students who demonstrate strong performance, research contributions, or leadership. These letters are authored without input from the student to maintain authenticity. For security and integrity reasons, recommendation letters are sent directly to the requesting institution and are not released to the student. Please note that simply completing GYEL sessions does not automatically qualify a participant to receive a recommendation letter.

Great question! Given the complexity of the UN’s structure, it can be challenging to understand how each component operates. The United Nations is an immense global organization with over 130,000 personnel, more than 6,000 UN-registered NGOs, and hundreds of departments, making it the world’s most comprehensive international institution—which is precisely why it is so vital to humanity.
The Global Youth Excellence & Leadership Program (GYEL) is a program within the UN system. Established a decade ago, GYEL was formed through a coalition of intergovernmental organizations, diplomats, ambassadors, permanent observers to the UN, NGOs, and organizations holding special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Rather than functioning as an external program, GYEL operates within the UN system and under the auspices of it’s Coalition Partners to the UN and diplomats and ambassadors registered and credentialed by both the UN and their respective state departments. For a visual representation of our structure, please see our About page.
GYEL’s primary Coalition Partners to the UN hold official UN credentials and security clearances. These are processed and registered through the United Nations Office and the United States Department of State, or their respective state departments, in adherence to all diplomatic protocols. They include sitting ambassadors, diplomats, and UN ECOSOC-registered special consultants, many of whose core role is to engage in high-level negotiations on behalf of the Permanent Observer, advise Heads of State, senior officials, and counterpart ambassadors on complex diplomatic and strategic matters at venues such as the United Nations, the White House, legislative bodies, and other major diplomatic forums.
Most recently, GYEL served as Deputy Convenor and Principal Partner at a UN plenary session, including the Strategic Innovation for Impact – UN Forum 2025, where it elevated youth voices and fostered cross-sector collaborations in the spirit of multilateral cooperation.
We encourage you to verify all information, including the credentials of diplomats, ambassadors, and UN ECOSOC Coalition Partners associated with GYEL, by consulting the appropriate authorities at the United Nations Headquarters or through official State Department channels.

Empowering students —particularly the underprivileged—for top university admissions, leadership, and excellence in STEM, economics, law, and beyond.
GYEL is one of the only programs within the United Nations system designed to support students with unique strengths—whether inside or outside the classroom—who aspire to attend top universities and build impactful careers that contribute to a greater global future.
While the UN primarily focuses on essential life necessities such as clean water and healthcare, our Coalition Partners to the UN recognize that higher education is also a critical milestone and a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty.
Our philosophy is that higher education and access to top universities are essential for students to pursue specialized learning, deepen their expertise, drive groundbreaking research, collaborate with changemakers, and build a more just and prosperous society.
GYEL’s contribution to the UN system is to collaborate with university admissions officers, educators, and education consultants to understand what is missing from the students they seek to admit, then bridge that gap by providing tailored programs that align with the desires of the world’s leading universities. We equip students with the resources, knowledge, experiences, networks, and opportunities to effectively showcase their strengths, stand out in competitive admissions, and secure their place at world-class universities—where they can further their specialized education and build meaningful careers that create lasting impact on society and the world.
While many programs focus on broad student development, GYEL is uniquely designed to support students—whether they excel in academics, leadership, STEM, entrepreneurship, or other fields—by providing them with the experiences and opportunities needed to stand out in competitive university admissions.
GYEL collaborates with admissions professionals from top global universities to understand what they look for in applicants, identify common gaps, and provide students with the skills and experiences needed to become successful candidates.
Students receive direct guidance from world-class leaders, industry pioneers, and coalition partners to the United Nations, opening doors to unique opportunities that set them apart in admissions and future careers.
91% of alumni believed GYEL strengthened their university applications. Additionally, more than 93% of parents felt that GYEL helped their child stand out in college and scholarship applications, with 96% saying they would recommend the program to other families.
GYEL identifies and invests in students with potential, regardless of where their strengths lie, ensuring they gain the experiences, recommendations, and real-world preparation needed to thrive at the highest levels.
We support students from all socioeconomic backgrounds who show promise, ensuring that access to opportunity is based on effort, ability, and potential—not privilege.
With decades of expertise, a world-class network, and direct collaboration with universities, GYEL is more than a
program—it’s a launchpad for top universities, meaningful careers, and global impact.

While many high-achieving students in STEM fields focus on perfecting their coding or lab skills, top colleges want to see how those skills can address real-world needs. GYEL offers hands-on exploration of cutting-edge innovations—think artificial intelligence applications for disaster relief or data-driven insights to improve public infrastructure. By demonstrating that they can translate algorithms into community-based solutions, participants show admissions committees that they have the vision to lead in STEM beyond the classroom.
Admissions officers at competitive universities often say that successful STEM candidates must have a humanistic lens—knowing how to communicate, empathize, and collaborate across disciplines. GYEL’s international and policy-focused sessions give technologically inclined students a chance to engage with ethical questions, global policies, and leadership strategies that complement their scientific pursuits, resulting in a more holistic portfolio.
Business schools increasingly seek applicants who balance profit with purpose. GYEL’s emphasis on leadership, advocacy, and ethical initiatives helps prospective undergraduates build narratives about more than just market share or competition wins. Students craft social enterprise proposals, volunteer with international networks, or contribute to policy discussions—all showcasing a commitment to making the business world better for everyone.
In addition to standard business clubs or entrepreneurship contests, GYEL participants learn to address global concerns—like poverty alleviation or sustainability—through strategic thinking and organizational planning. This real-world approach to business problem-solving often resonates with prestigious universities eager to admit the next generation of socially conscious CEOs and innovators.
Whether a student dreams of discovering medical breakthroughs or championing environmental regulations, GYEL offers a forum for them to explore urgent issues like public health, disease prevention, and climate resilience. By bridging science and policy, participants gain a deeper understanding of how healthcare systems work and how scientific research translates into practice.
Medical admissions committees look for candidates who grasp broader healthcare frameworks—epidemiology, global health diplomacy, and ethical decision-making. Through collaborative projects or potential research paper tracks, GYEL attendees can gain experience that underscores their ability to excel in rigorous scientific environments and meaningfully advance community health initiatives.
From diplomacy simulations to analyzing international organizations, GYEL immerses humanities-oriented students in the realities of global governance. Those seeking degrees in law, international relations, political science, or cultural studies gain firsthand insights into how treaties are shaped, how human rights policies evolve, and how grassroots movements spark large-scale change.
Today’s top-tier liberal arts colleges value applicants who have moved beyond theory to real-world influence. GYEL empowers participants to conceptualize projects that tackle complex social issues, offering a chance to show leadership in areas like educational reforms or community activism. Having an endorsement or letter of recommendation tied to such a globally recognized framework can set a student apart in a crowded field of high achievers.
By exploring broad and socially relevant topics, students become more flexible in choosing majors or minors later on. Such breadth can pave the way for interdisciplinary study or even open doors to niche programs that blend, for example, economics and environmental science.
Whether writing policy briefs, pitching a social venture, or analyzing global case studies, students build practical communication expertise—an asset in all fields, from summer program or internship interviews to persuasive speeches in Model UN.
Through GYEL’s connections with United Nations affiliates and global thought leaders, participants can earn recommendations or networking opportunities that outshine the usual extracurriculars found on college résumés.
Admissions officers often see the same bullet points on every applicant’s résumé: debate club, sports, a high GPA. GYEL’s recognized brand and the depth of its initiatives ensure a distinctive narrative that underscores global awareness and a desire to forge meaningful change.
